Absenteeism and Presenteeism - attitudes among Tomorrow's Work Force

In recent years there have been many media reports about absenteeism and Norwegian workers' morale. Very few of these stories have referred to research. We believe attitudes to work and absence are shaped before people enter the labor market.

In this project we examined the attitudes towards absence and presence among more than 6 000 students in Norwegian high schools. New knowledge and documentation in this field will be useful for employers to address attitudes and expectations of tomorrow's workers. The Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise's (NHO) Working Fund financed the project.

The project had the following goals:

  1. provide a summary of knowledge of the literature on attitudes to absenteeism in schools and workplaces
  2. map attitudes towards absenteeism in school and expectations of employment among students of the first year of upper secondary education, and study what promotes attendance
  3. clarify how absenteeism in the workplace manifests itself for those who drop out of secondary education, compared to those who complete.

In collaboration with NTNU, we conducted literature reviews, survey of students, focus group interviews with students, as well as analysis of registry data to achieve project objectives.
