PEMWE – Developing next generation low cost and durable PEM water electrolysers

In this project, SINTEF and NTNU will build competence and contribute to the further development of PEM water electrolysis technology with respect to cost and durability

The main activities of the project are:

  • Investigation of PEM water electrolyser cells electrochemically to determine changing material properties upon ageing, especially as function of operation conditions
  • Establishing and implementing non-destructive characterisation methods for localization and quantification of contribution to increased overpotentials
  • Developing surface treatments with lower cost that will prevent the formation of insulating oxides at titanium bipolar plates and sinters.
  • Identifying and screening new more stable anode bipolar plate materials and surface coating techniques with further cost reduction potential
