Infections resulting from exposure to pathogens in the environment are an ever-growing social problem. The principal focus of activity of SINTEF Technology and Society, Medical Microbiology Unit is to develop expertise and diagnostic tools for monitoring and preventing infections of environmental origin.

We operate a well-established and well-equipped laboratory, where we perform analyses for the identification of infectious strains of bacteria in the environment, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Legionella pneumophila and coliform bacteria) and other environmental pathogens such as amoeba and parasites.

Besides our own activities, we also collaborate closely with the microbiology departments in St. Olav’s Hospital in Trondheim and NTNU, sharing scientific activities, resources and premises. The three institutions have recently formalised their cooperation via the establishment of a joint Gemini Centre for Medical Microbiology.
