The main focus of the meeting was HYDROGENi – a new Centre of Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) focusing on hydrogen and ammonia, led by SINTEF. Executive Vice President of Sustainability at SINTEF and HYDROGENi Director Nils Røkke introduced the centre’s background, its partners and its goals, and spoke about the wider context of hydrogen in Norway and Europe.
HYDROGENi focuses on both blue and green hydrogen and ammonia. Blue hydrogen (hydrogen produced with carbon capture and storage – CCS) has been particularly relevant recently as a replacement for natural gas. As such, Nils also discussed SINTEF’s work with CCS, namely through the Norwegian CCS Research Centre (NCCS).
SINTEF has previously collaborated with Danish actors through initiatives such as the Nordic CCS Competence Centre (NORDICCS). In recent years, CCS has also seen a major increase in activity in Denmark, and earlier this month, the European Commission approved a EUR 1.1 billion scheme to support CCS deployment in Denmark.
