Agreement on standards for tracing food

Leading researchers and IT vendors have agreed on the use of a standard for electronic tracing of food. This happened at an international conference organized by SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture, November 2011.

The goal of the conference was to discuss the use of EPCIS (Electronic Product Code Information Services) as a common standard for tracing food. The conference was organized in collaboration with the Norwegian project "eSporing" (eTracing), and was partially funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

Communities from Spain, Malaysia, Iceland, Sweden, USA and Norway presented their activities and products based on the EPCIS standard which provides exciting opportunities including the use of mobile technology in the traceability of food.

–The fact that we now reached an agreement on a standard means we can quickly provide consumers with adequate information about the food they eat, says Maitri Thakur from SINTEF.
