Building Research Institute and SINTEF discuss potential merger

Informal discussions have been going on for some time between the Norwegian Building Research Institute and SINTEF regarding a possible union of the Institute with SINTEF’s building and construction-related units.
Both the Norwegian Building Research Institute and SINTEF are private foundations. Both of their boards of directors have agreed to start concrete talks to examine the possibility of merging the two foundations’ activities in the fields of building, housing and construction into a single powerful unit.
A merger of the organisations would produce a unit capable of performing an impressive amount of R & D in the fields of building, housing and construction in European terms. The Research Council of Norway is positive to the idea of a merger, as are other organisations that collaborate with the institutions, such as the Federation of Norwegian Construction Industries (NBL) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
Such a merger would have several obvious advantages for both institutions, including the prospect of a greater degree of internationalisation and a stronger position vis-à-vis the EU’s research programmes.
