Alloy development and related heat treatments

SINTEF focuses on the development of green and sustainable alloys with targeted properties. The array of our laboratory facilities, including casting lab., 3D-printer, Arc Melter, heat treatment furnace, SEM/TEM, mechanical testing, and special chemistry analysis tools such as Butanol particle extraction, enable us not only to produce and heat treat customized alloys, but also characterize their microstructure and analyze their properties in an efficient manner.

These experimental activities are further enhanced by our state-of-art commercial and in-house modeling tools such as Thermo-calc, Micress, Alstruc and PreciMS. The combination of experimental and modeling tools has led us to address the design of the following industrial alloys:

  • New Al alloys for high pressure die casting with the post-consumer scrap
  • High strength, corrosion resistant and low carbon footprint Al alloys
  • Recycling friendly green Al alloys
  • Additive manufacturing alloys with customized mechanical and functional properties
