Borehole stability

Borehole stability is an important issue in order to minimise non productive time during drilling. SINTEF provides rock mechanics knowledge and tools for selecting a safe mud weight and optimal well path.

Over the last 30 years, SINTEF has developed knowledge and tools towards the improvement of borehole stability:

  • Methods for characterization of shales including mechanical, petrophysical, fluid exposure, post-failure analysis
  • Software for advanced borehole stability calculation (PSI) which includes a poroelastic model with time, chemical, thermal, plasticity, strength anisotropy and scaling (lab to field) effects
  • An extensive database with field shale properties
