Sports scheduling mainly consists in determining the date and the venue in which the games of a tournament will be played while taking into account goals and requirements of all stakeholders. Scheduling a sports league or a tournament is a combinatorial optimization problem that has attracted the interest of the research community over the years due to the very hard theoretical problems with obvious practical applications.

SINTEF's Group of Optimization has been involved in sports scheduling for over a decade, developing software that has scheduled over 150 000 games in Norway and assisting professional sports federations in delivering yearly game calendars.
