We also support the development of new CCS concepts and help mature them toward pilot testing, such as the promising Chemical Looping Combustion technology (CLC).
We work within the following areas:
- CCS: post-combustion, pre-combustion, oxyfuel combustion and chemical looping combustion (CLC)
- Clean combustion technologies, including exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to increase the CO2 concentration in the flue gas and make post-combustion capture more efficient
Typical projects for us are:
- Assessment of implementing oxyfuel combustion as a retrofit or in new plants
- Development of new burner technology for applications that are not commercially available, such as oxyfuel solutions for gas turbines, boilers, waste incineration grates, etc.
- Testing and improvement of combustion equipment for use with unconventional fuels (e.g. hydrogen-rich) or oxidants (e.g. oxygen and CO2 mixtures and exhaust gas recirculation/EGR), among other things to increase the CO2 concentration in the flue gas and make post-combustion capture more efficient.
The methods we use are:
- Experimental facilities ranging from laboratory scale to pilot-scale combustion units, with advanced measurement capability (updated gas and particle analyzers, laser diagnostics)
- Various pilot infrastructures for CCS (part of the European research infrastructure network ECCSEL): 100 kW/10 bar oxyfuel HIPROX
- Demonstration plant for CO2 capture based on a 100 kWe gas turbine (DEMOXYT)
- High expertise in in-house developed, commercial, and open source CFD tools
Why choose SINTEF?
At SINTEF we have more than 20 years of experience with combustion processes based on hydrogen-rich fuels and oxyfuel mixtures – key technologies within CCS for the power and process industries. We have built unique infrastructure for industrial-scale testing, including HIPROX (pressurized combustion rig, 10 bar) and DEMOXYT (oxyfuel power cycle with commercial gas turbine), both part of ECCSEL.
We work with CCS (post-combustion, pre-combustion, oxyfuel and chemical looping combustion/CLC), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) for more efficient post-combustion capture, and clean combustion technologies, in collaboration with SINTEF's capture specialists and international networks such as the International Flame Research Foundation (IFRF), ETN Global, IEA TCP on Sustainable Combustion, and EERA.
