Shale caprock creep as a fracture healing mechanism. How does exposure to CO2 alter caprock behaviour?

Several types of laboratory tests have been conducted over the years to assess on the one hand, shale caprock's ability to deform in a ductile manner under constant stress conditions, known as creep behaviour, and on the other hand, its reaction to fluid exposure in terms of stiffness and strength changes.

By combining these tests, it is possible to investigate numerically how a fracture or a micro-annulus will evolve after the closure of an injection well in a CO2 storage operation. Some scenarios show the total healing of the fracture, while others predict that the fracture may remain open.
