IEC 61508: Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems. This series of standards addresses the use of programmable electronic systems in safety–related systems.

SINTEF has more than 20 years' experience with assessments of safety related systems.
IEC 61508-certified products are more likely to extend market penetration and offer the potential of increased sales growth. The benefits of increased hardware and systematic integrity can also be seen in improved product quality

The standard and e.g. the guideline OLF 070 (Guidelines for the Application of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 in the petroleum activities on the continental shelf) define requirements for the total solution and the documentation of the delivered product. Manufacturers and suppliers must therefore have sufficient knowledge to provide the information required by the system integrator in order to document the fulfillment of functional requirements.

SINTEF realises that many Customers prefer a staged approach to product certification and therefore we also offer the following:
Pre-assessment: This normally requires an on-site visit. We conduct interviews and discussions with management and hardware and software engineering staff. And/or perform a gap-analysis based on the available quality and safety documents.

Our services include:

  • Certification
