Norway's first railway was opened in 1854 and ran from Kristiania to Eidsvoll. It was launched as a great success, leading to the planning of several new railway lines in the country.

Since then, there has been significant development in the railway sector, with both technological and organizational advancements. For a long time, the state was the sole operator, but competition has emerged in recent years, bringing many new players into both passenger and freight transport.

Today, development is focused on internationalization and knowledge exchange across borders, highlighting the possibilities for interoperability and efficiency gains more than ever before.

SINTEF collaborates with major railway stakeholders and contributes to enhanced cooperation with relevant academic communities at Norwegian universities.

Our goal is to promote expertise and knowledge in the railway sector. A systematic research focus will provide great value for businesses and significant societal benefits.
