The Internet of the Future

An intelligent, resilient and sustainable internet – designed for the needs of tomorrow.

Contact persons

The internet of the future must handle explosive growth in data, an ever‑increasing number of connected devices, and the need for fast, secure and intelligent communication. This forms the foundation for a digital future where networks, data and analytics converge in real time.

Our research provides the basis for autonomous systems, smart cities, sustainable industry and next‑generation health services, where data flows securely and efficiently between people, machines and systems.

Our research includes

  • Internet of Things (IoT): where billions of sensors and devices communicate seamlessly.
  • Cloud computing: a combination of various forms of internet‑based software, virtualized hardware, and infrastructure delivered as a service.
  • Edge computing: enabling data to be analyzed and acted upon close to the data source, reducing latency and increasing security.
  • Communication, navigation and network infrastructure: ranging from quantum‑secure communication solutions and advanced underwater communication to 5G/6G networks for critical societal functions and defence.
  • Data sharing and data economy: commercialisation of high‑quality data, as well as frameworks for data and AI pipelines that ensure interoperability, governance and regulatory compliance.
  • Parallel web for AI agents: an ecosystem where autonomous systems can explore, verify and communicate knowledge with high precision.

Through collaboration with industry, the public sector and international partners, we are building a more intelligent, resilient and sustainable internet – tailored to the needs of tomorrow.
