Tribological properties of varnished elastomers - part 1: Characterization of the surfaces by the modified Wilhelmy method

Abstract
Various experiments have been carried out to characterize smooth and rough varnished SBR composites. The composition of the coated elastomers was analyzed by ATR-IR and SEM-EDX. The topography and coating thickness were determined by SEM, white light interferometry and digital microscopy. Dynamic water contact angles were determined by using the modified Wilhelmy method. It was shown that contact angle hysteresis values correlate well with roughness parameters which are obtained by white light interferometry and measurements with the stylus instrument.
