The specific behaviour of magnesium alloys in machining processes

Abstract

Efficient machining demands that high cutting speeds are used wheneve r possible. However, when very high speeds are used in machining magn esium there may be a danger of chip fire, because magnesium and magne sium alloys are pyrophoric, and the material build-up on HM cutting e dges may constitute problems. This paper especially concerns the mate rial build-up on the flank sides of the tool.
