Biosecurity in connection to Polychaete cultivation on RAS sludge

Abstract

In order to investigate biosecurity aspect of cultivating polychaete worms on RAS sludge and potential bioaccumulation of known aquaculture pathogenic microorganisms in polychaete tissue, we have quantified Y. ruckeri, F. psychrophilum, Saprolegnia spp. (S.parasitica) and L. monocytogenes by dPCR method. Two cultivation experiments of three and four weeks were conducted with polychaetes feeding on RAS sludge. In both cases the results indicated that there was no bioaccumulation of known aquaculture pathogens in polychaetae tissue, therefore there is no biosecurity risks in connection to polychaete cultivation on RAS sludge
