Effect of impact angle, exposure time, and particle size on impact erosion

Abstract

Removal of material from the surface due to particle impact is typically referred to as erosive wear. Impact erosion involves many parameters and several wear mechanisms. In the present study, sandblast type erosion tester was used to investigate the influence of particle size, impact angle and exposure time in impact erosion. Air-borne dolomite particles were accelerated onto target specimens of mild steel (S355MC) under a given velocity (70 ms−1) at room temperature. The visual observations show that the eroded profile changes significantly against the impact angle and exposure time. It is also noticed that the instantaneous impact angle is changed during the erosion process. The degradation of dolomite particles under different experimental conditions is also presented.
