Abstract
In Norway, during the last decades, mining industry, water supply necissity, and hydropower production supported the investment and the technological development in dam engineering. Until 1920, following the trend in Europe, the masonry gravity dam was the main type. Concrete dams, initially gravity dams and then plate and arch dams, was the leading dam type until 1950 when rockfill dams started to dominate the total number of new constructions.
