Abstract
This study focuses on the assessment of rehabilitation requirements for concrete and masonry gravity dams in Norway, and the solutions that can be applied, particularly passive anchors. It begins with a brief description of the most frequently used rehabilitation techniques to repair and halt deterioration in gravity dams. Safety requirements related to the main failure mechanisms of gravity dams stipulated in the Norwegian regulations are then summarized. This is followed by presentation of a numerical application based on Discrete Element Method for structural analysis of gravity dams. Finally, the rehabilitation of a specific dam, at Nygårdsvatn, is described in detail, focusing on the design of passive anchors.
