Slag - Carbon reactivity test (Version 1)

Abstract

It has been observed that the kinetics of the carbothermic reduction of oxides from molten slags is affected by the type of the carbonaceous materials. This effect can be considered as a parameter for selecting proper carbon materials and even for process optimization. This has been the motivation of some research works in the last few years at NTNU and SINTEF to develop a test method for evaluating the potential of carbonaceous materials for reacting with metallurgical slags. In the present study the applied experimental procedures for developing a slag-carbon reactivity test for manganese ferroalloys industry are evaluated. In this case three techniques consisting of slag-carbon interaction in thermogravimetery method, in induction furnace and in sessile drop method are compared.
