Evaluating the potential escapee reduction by applying El-Not in salmon farming

Abstract

In this report, the reduction in number of escapees is estimated for the case that El-Not is used to detect holes that occur due to breaking of net cables. The holes data from a net service company that repairs and cleans the nets at the end of a production cycle was analyzed. This included five different net shapes that are commonly used in Norwegian aquaculture. El-Not, if functioning as specified by the manufacturers, could contribute to a significant reduction in number of escapees. We analyzed three different scenarios, one - where the entire net is covered with El-Not, in second, the section from the water surface down to the bottom rope is covered and lastly, panels are used from 1 m beow the water surface down to the bottom rope. In all three cases, potentially, we see a significant reduction in escapees. It is suggested that if electric wires are used in every 4th net cable, holes bigger than 4 broken meshes will be detected and most escapees potentially avoided by rapidly fixing these holes.
