Barriers and enablers to implementing AI in organizations: a systematic literature review

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is significantly changing the way companies work, operate, and compete (Füller et al., 2022). Despite the potential of AI, many organizations face challenges in successfully implementing and integrating AI into their business processes. Recent research shows that companies require frameworks to support the implementation and scaling of AI (Kanioura & Lucini, 2020). Moreover, the implementation of AI in organizations has not been extensively studied to date (Makarius et al., 2020). To fill this void, we aim within this study to identify the barriers that hinder the effective implementation of AI and the enablers that facilitate it. To this end, we are currently conducting a systematic literature review of 55 articles. The findings are categorized using the Technology – Organization – Environment framework (Tornatzky & Fleischer, 1990), supplemented by the People dimension (Gupta et al., 2020). This literature review aims to synthesize the existing literature and develop a comprehensive framework that outlines the factors that influence AI implementation in organizations.
