Meltwater Content and Volume during Fresh Fish Transport

Abstract

Meltwater is produced whenever ice is used to cool fresh fish. The highest flow rates of meltwater are generated early during transportation while fish is in the process of reaching 0 °C, challenging collection systems onboard trucks. This report provides measurements of meltwater accumulation early in the transport process and the composition of that meltwater to inform design of collection systems. The average meltwater content was determined for Total Suspended Solids (TSS, 400 mg/L), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD, 5000 mg/L), and Total Nitrogen content (TN, 300 mg/L). It was found that more than a tank volume, 250 L, of meltwater was produced in 40% of the cases during the first 4 hours of transport in summer.
