The Lightfoot project - Using Life-cycle assessment (LCA) as a tool to reduce negative environmental impact

Abstract

The Lightfoot project was a research and innovation initiative funded by The Research Council of Norway. The project aimed to develop a new generation of safety footwear designed to significantly improve ergonomics and comfort for workers in both light and heavy industries. By addressing the high prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints in targeted industrial sectors, the project focused on reducing physical strain and improving long-term user wellbeing through innovative design solutions, materials, and construction methods. In parallel, the project worked systematically to reduce the environmental impact of safety footwear production. This presentation summarized the project’s approach to environmental impact reduction and proposed an LCA-specific framework for integrating life cycle assessment into the design stage of innovation projects.
