A Framework for Mapping Industry 5.0 Technologies for SMEs

Abstract

Industry 5.0 has been introduced as the next industrial paradigm, and six categories of emerging technologies have been identified that support this development. However, before manufacturing companies can strategically invest in and implement these technologies, there is a need for methods and tools to assess the current capabilities of the company and guide the decision makers towards feasible options. This paper presents a novel methodology for mapping and modelling the current state in a manufacturing company (AS-IS) with regards to Industry 5.0 technologies. The resulting map lays the foundation for strategic development towards a desired future state (TO-BE) and provides the outline for a roadmap to close the gap. A discussion is made on practical applications and implications for industry, and the need for domain expertise and cross-disciplinary teams is highlighted as a crucial success factor.
