Abstract
This paper presents a local control strategy for battery energy storage systems (BESS) to maintain distribution grid voltage within predefined limits. The control system dynamically switches between three proportional controllers to determine the required voltage adjustment—either to support grid voltage or restore the BESS energy level to its reference. A voltage sensitivity-based algorithm then translates the desired voltage change into optimal active and reactive power setpoints. This enables flexible and autonomous BESS operation, simultaneously providing voltage support and managing energy levels. Simulation results on a low-voltage distribution grid demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
