Opportunities and Limitations in Norwegian Ports for Charging Infrastructure for an Electric Coastal Express

Abstract

This project memo is a part of the work performed in Sea Zero Work package 5: Infrastructure for Green Maritime Transport. It summarises the mapping of the energy infrastructure in ten ports along the Coastal Express route including the potential for further development of physical and electric infrastructure at the Coastal Express quays. The ten ports are chosen based on the duration of the Coastal Express’s stays at these ports with the current time-schedule, allowing the maximum time for charging. The purpose of the memo is to describe and quantify (when possible) the technical and structural grid-related challenges that needs to be solved to enable high-power charging at the selected Coastal Express ports. The mapping is conducted through interviews with the local grid companies and port personnel, and by surveying unrestricted information online. Additionally, the memo includes a section describing the general procedures for applications and allocations to reserve new capacity in the power grid.
