Abstract
With modern, globalized value chains, disruptions to transportation systems may have large, far-reaching economic and environmental effects. In this work, we investigate a hypothetical scenario with a widespread disruption to intercontinental rail freight transport between Asia and Europe. In addition to the disruption, we examine mitigation scenarios where alternative transport routes are adopted. The environmental and socioeconomic effects of the disruption and mitigation scenarios indicate negative effects both in Asia and in Europe, with the greatest impacts occurring in Asia.
