MPC as an add-on for single-bird collision avoidance

Abstract

In this presentation, we introduce a control strategy for mitigating single-bird collisions with wind turbine blades. The architecture consists of a low-level wind turbine controller, and a high-level controller responsible for bird avoidance. The context is presented thoroughly (concept, pipeline, bird tracking and trajectory prediction, collision risk assessment), before the control strategy is presented. Simulations using a middle-fidelity model are presented and show satisfactory bird avoidance rates.
