ISRM Suggested Methods for Triaxial Compression Testing of Shales and Mudstones

Abstract

This ISRM Suggested Method provides recommended approaches that cover the entire sequence of preparing specimens and performing single-stage triaxial compression tests for fully water saturated shales and mudstones. It includes core handling, preservation, and specimen preparation. Apparatus requirements are described in a complete manner, as is specimen mounting. All phases of a triaxial compression test are explained, with recommended procedures provided for the saturation stage, the consolidation stage, and the shearing stage, covering both drained and undrained approaches. Methods for calculating allowable strain rate are provided. Certain basic properties are needed for test interpretation and documentation, and determination of these is also described. This Suggested Method also includes analysis, and presentation of the test results.
