Abstract
This paper examines the visual behaviour of young motorcycle riders (A1 category, age 16–17) to better understand how
they gather and interpret information in dynamic traffic environments. Using mobile eye-tracking, the study investigates
saccadic movements, fixation patterns, and the balance between egocentric and allocentric gaze strategies during realworld riding.
Eighteen participants completed guided rides through four predefined Areas of Interest (AOI), representing typical yet
challenging traffic scenarios for young riders: a 180-degree right-hand exit, a series of combination curves, a left turn at a
limited-visibility intersection, and two consecutive intersections with dense traffic.
The data allow for detailed analysis of how riders shift their gaze between near-field control and distant predictive
scanning, indicating the degree to which they anticipate upcoming events versus reacting to them. The concept of
predictive gaze control—the ability to “look ahead” and foresee potential hazards—is central to the study’s theoretical
framework.
By analysing saccadic and fixation patterns in relation to the spatial and temporal characteristics of each AOI, the research
aims to clarify whether young riders primarily rely on reactive, egocentric information gathering or demonstrate emerging
allocentric and predictive awareness. The results will contribute to refining training methods for novice motorcyclists and
to enhancing our understanding of risk perception and decision-making among young riders.
