Optimizing Infrastructure for Hydrogen Blends: A Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming Approach

Abstract

To analyse the viability of hydrogen integration in natural gas infras- tructure, we present an optimization tool that evaluates hydrogen trans- port through either admixing natural gas or repurposing pipelines for pure hydrogen pipelines. The model is formulated as a mixed-integer non-linear optimization problem that brings together pooling and flow- pressure formulations. The model is implemented as an extension to the open-source EnergyModelsX (EMX) framework and applied to a case study from the SHIMMER project.
