Oxidation of Eu containing aluminum

Abstract

During any melting operation of aluminum and its alloys, majority of the problem begins with the oxidation of the molten aluminum. The amount of dross that is formed due to oxidation is considered as a material loss. The oxidation of aluminum and its alloys have been investigated in detail. With the use of rare earth elements, many new alloys have been developed. Europium has been found to be beneficial particularly for Alsingle bondSi alloys as it modifies the eutectic silicon phase to enhance the properties of the cast parts. However, the oxidation behavior of Eu containing aluminum has not been reported yet. Therefore, in this work, the oxidation characteristics of Al10Eu were evaluated. It was found that EuAl4 intermetallic had the tendency to be oxidized and after 24 h at 750 °C, no Eu was found in the matrix, and it was fully consumed to form complex spinel oxides.
