SHARP – Safe HAndling of Refrigerated Pressurised ammonia

Work packages

WP1 – Loss of containment and suppression experiments

WP1 leader: Knut Vågsæther, Professor at the University of Southeastern Norway

In this WP, ammonia release and dispersion experiments and testing of water-mist systems for suppression of ammonia dispersion will be planned and executed. Research questions:

  1. What is the behaviour of refrigerated ammonia released from refrigerated intermediate pressure conditions?
  2. How is the ammonia dispersion affected by water mist, and what is the quantitative effect of droplet size?

WP2 – Model development and experimental validation

WP2 leader: Nils Erland L. Haugen, Senior Research Scientist at SINTEF Energy Research

A multi-scale approach will be employed to develop and validate a model for predicting loss-of-containment behaviour and water-based mitigation effectiveness. Research questions:

  1. What are the collective quantitative contributions of the relevant transport mechanisms that influence heat, mass and momentum transport between the highly turbulent gas and a high number of interacting dispersed droplets?
  2. How will the interplay between non-equilibrium transport, droplet breakup and turbulent fluid flow affect the loss-of-containment behaviour and water-based mitigation solutions for pressurized refrigerated ammonia?

WP3 – Benchmarking and industry cases studies

WP3 leader: Eirik H. Fyhn, Research Scientist at SINTEF Energy Research

This WP will apply knowledge gained in WP1 and WP2 to understand relevant consequences for industry and directly improve commercial tools for dispersion and safety analysis. Research questions:

  1. What are the hazards and consequences of intermediate-pressure release of refrigerated ammonia in relevant industrial settings?
  2. To what extent can mitigation measures be optimized by using a high-pressure water-mist system?
  3. To what extent do existing research tools and commercial tools agree with the dispersion models developed in SHARP?
  4. How can current regulations be updated to better account for relevant findings?
