QSTAR - Centre for Quantum Computing and Applications

Ny kunnskap, nye metoder og et sterkt norsk fagmiljø skal gjøre Norge bedre rustet til å utvikle og på sikt ta i bruk kvanteberegning i forskning og næringsliv.

Quantum computers could eventually solve some tasks that are too demanding for today’s computers. Getting there requires a better understanding of how to carry out the calculations and when quantum methods can offer an advantage.

QSTAR brings together researchers in mathematics, physics, chemistry and optimisation from Norwegian universities and research institutes, with partners in Denmark and Sweden. The centre builds on Norwegian expertise and collaboration to strengthen Norway’s contribution to international research.

Researchers develop mathematical methods to protect quantum information from errors. They study how to translate algorithms into instructions suited to the hardware and develop new quantum algorithms. They also analyse the resources these algorithms require and when they can outperform methods for conventional computers.

Chemistry is a key area for developing and assessing the methods. Calculations on molecules provide concrete tasks for testing and comparing algorithms. The centre also explores optimisation and risk modelling. The work combines mathematical analysis, software development and simulations, supported by access to powerful computers and quantum computers through research collaborations. Results, software and datasets will be shared so that other researchers can build on the work and compare new methods.

SINTEF leads the centre and contributes research on optimisation, quantum algorithms and translating algorithms into machine instructions. SINTEF also coordinates collaboration and dialogue with industry and public sector organisations.

Through researcher training, exchanges and shared activities, the centre aims to build a lasting Norwegian research community. The results will give researchers and industry a better basis for assessing and exploring future uses of quantum computing.
