Nature and the environment are under increasing pressure. Therefore, we need to develop transport systems that better consider what nature can tolerate.

TRACE is a research centre working to determine how the transport sector can become more sustainable. We examine how unnecessary transport can be avoided, how transport can be shifted to more environmentally friendly solutions, and how transport methods can be improved. This is referred to as the ASI framework.

We study how transport affects nature, the environment, and land use – and how various measures and regulations function in practice. The goal is to identify solutions that are both effective and sustainable.

TRACE brings together experts from across the country in the fields of transport, natural sciences, economics, and spatial planning. We collaborate with authorities, municipalities, and residents in projects and participatory processes.

We also develop new methods that make it easier for authorities and transport actors to understand and manage their impact on nature and the environment. This includes a better basis for decisions, tools for assessing measures holistically, and strategies for avoiding harmful consequences for nature and the environment.

TRACE will help change how we plan and manage the transport sector in Norway – so that we can build a low-emission society that preserves nature for future generations.
