The main objective of PEIS is to document the potential for energy efficiency in the seafood industry and describe relevant measures for energy savings. A more optimal and efficient use of energy, along with the conversion from fossil to renewable energy, will be important for the seafood industry in both the short and long term.
Sustainability is a key concept addressing the global and national challenges we face, in light of global warming and an anticipated power shortage. It is also a topic of increasing concern to consumers, customers and investors.
Energy efficiency measures can thus contribute to increased profitability through reduced energy costs and by attracting customers and investors who value sustainable practices, as well as reducing environmental and climate impact through decreased use of fossil energy sources.
To reach the main objective, the seafood sector is divided into four sub-sectors: whitefish, shrimp, aquaculture and pelagic fish. This is further broken down into the following sub-goals:
- Map best practices for energy-efficient operations across various seafood sectors
- Map the potential for future energy efficiency improvements within various seafood sectors
- Describe process-specific energy-saving measures, including calculations of investment costs, operating costs and energy savings
- Map the potential for replacing fossil energy with renewable energy
