Heat Pump Systems for Low-Energy and Passive House Buildings

Low-energy homes and passive houses are very well insulated and airtight dwellings with balanced ventilation systems and efficient heat recovery. Annual energy demand for space heating and ventilation air heating is therefore lower, in some cases significantly lower, than in homes built to current building regulations (TEK2007) or earlier.

Within the "IEA Heat Pump Programme", an international project (IEA HPP Annex 32) has been started on heat pump systems for heating and cooling of low-energy homes and passive houses. The purpose of the project is to:

  • map and analyse existing heat pump systems for this type of home
  • develop new heat pump systems with higher energy efficiency and lower costs
  • improve system integration
  • standardise information to increase the competitiveness and quality of the systems
  • analyse economic and market aspects

Final Report – Part 4 Annex 32: Economical heating and cooling systems for low energy houses

IEA HPP Annex 32 runs from 2006 to 2010, and the participating countries are Canada, Finland, France, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland (project leader), Sweden, South Korea, Germany, the USA and Austria. Norway's participation is funded by ENOVA SF, while SINTEF Energy Research has responsibility for planning and carrying out the project activities.
