Cost-effective utilisation of bioenergy – Advanced biomass and waste combustion

Contact person

aCOM was a research project in energy production from biomass and waste.

The purpose of the project was to develop new concept(s) for advanced combustion of waste and/or biomass. The focus was on developing systems that would be more cost-effective, environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. The research programme was intended to support Norwegian industry in the area of waste and biomass combustion.

Various methods were used to reach the project's objectives, including theoretical studies with the development and use of advanced simulation models, as well as small-scale laboratory experiments. Several rigs were used in the project, in addition to both conventional and advanced measurement equipment.

Project overview

aCOM was a KMB project (Knowledge-building Project for Industry) supported by the Research Council of Norway under the Renergi programme. This researcher-driven project was to build competence in the field of energy production from waste and biomass among all project participants. aCOM focused on systems for advanced combustion and was structured into five sub-projects:

SP1 - Fuel knowledge
The purpose of this sub-project was to demonstrate innovative fuel preparation and blending in order to achieve more cost-effective fuels and fuel blends, fuels and fuel blends that minimise corrosion and deposit formation, and more fuel-flexible systems. The possibilities for reducing the environmental impact of the tested fuels were studied.
A method was developed for comparing and testing fuels with respect to combustion characteristics, to be used for identifying opportunities and problems associated with new fuels.

SP2 - Advanced combustion
The main objective of this sub-project was to develop at least one new combustion concept and to acquire knowledge about several different advanced combustion techniques. SP2 was structured into four parts, each addressing one combustion technique: oxygen/nitrogen-enriched combustion, additives, reduced excess air, and combustion of lower-quality biofuels.

SP3 - Operation and emissions
The purpose of this sub-project was knowledge building in operational and emissions issues, particularly with regard to corrosion and deposit formation mechanisms and emission characteristics, related to the development of the advanced combustion techniques proposed in SP2.

SP4 - Education
The purpose of this activity was long-term competence building and strengthening of education, including a PhD candidate, in advanced combustion of biomass and waste.

SP5 - Technology monitoring and information dissemination
