SINTEF Energy has participated in several CEDREN projects and contributed its expertise on water reservoirs. Studies of physical conditions in reservoirs involve examining parameters such as water temperature, water stratification, ice cover and water-covered area.
Studies are based on field measurements, data analysis and the development of numerical models (2D, 3D). Data analysis provides the basis for investigating the physical processes occurring in water reservoirs, while numerical simulations model new and possible operating patterns for hydropower plants.
We work within these areas:
- Physical conditions in water reservoirs (ice cover, water temperature, water-covered area, etc.)
- Hydropower production in accordance with environmental requirements
- Numerical modelling of water reservoirs (2D, 3D)
- Minimum flow requirements and physical conditions in rivers downstream of power plants

Typical assignments for us are:
- Studies and proposals for good solutions that take into account both hydropower production and the environment in water reservoirs and rivers downstream of power plants
- Simulation of new operating patterns and assessment of consequences for the environment in water reservoirs and rivers downstream of power plants
- Environmental impact assessments in connection with the revision of licensing terms
Why choose SINTEF?
We are the only ones in Norway with expertise in several areas:
- numerical modelling of physical conditions in water reservoirs
- environmental design in regulated rivers and reservoirs
- production and planning for hydropower.
Who do we do this for?
- Hydropower producers
- The Norwegian Environment Agency
- The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE)
- The Research Council of Norway
