The SafeBESS conference: Fire safety of battery energy storage systems in buildings

The SafeBESS conference concludes 4 years of research on technology and building design for safe operation of battery energy storage systems (BESS). The project has been a collaboration between the research partners SINTEF Energy, SINTEF Community, RISE Fire Research and NTNU, with support from industry partners. One of the main deliverables from the project is a guideline for safe battery room design, which will be presented during the conference.

Keynote

Jonna Hynynen

Jonna Hynynen obtained her PhD in Materials Chemistry from Chalmers University of Technology in 2019 and is currently a researcher at Chalmers Industriteknik. She specializes in the safety aspects of lithium-ion batteries, with a focus on combustion gas toxicity and dispersion, fire effluents, and supporting risk assessment, fire protection design, and safe BESS deployment. Her work combines experimental research, analysis, and application-oriented insights, bridging the gap between scientific understanding and practical fire safety engineering.
