COP26: SINTEF Global Climate Fund – Research for a zero-emissions future

To be able to keep the 1.5 degrees target alive we need net zero emissions by 2050. To achieve net zero, we need not only to cut emissions, but also to actively remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere at a massive scale.

This is exactly what Climate-positive solutions do. Carbon dioxide removal technologies are one of these solutions but we need to expand on technologies rapidly and secure new ways of isolating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.

At the same time, CO₂ removal is essential yet under focused – and it's getting urgent. Current research investment does not take us to net zero.

SINTEF Global Climate Fund is a new compensation scheme that will finance research into climate positive solutions, such as removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and ensuring climate neutrality by 2050. The challenge is that there is no clear ownership for historical emissions, no UN agreement on offset markets, and limited research to find solutions. The SINTEF Global Climate Fund is our attempt to address this and contribute to an infant market for maturing net zero solutions.

The second part of this event will be a panel where Alexandra Bech Gjørv will discuss the need for research in climate positive solutions with representatives from civil society, science, industry and politicians. What role will greenhouse gas removal play towards meeting the net zero goal by 2050, and how do we mobilise for the innovation needed to meet the challenge?
