Our expertise

The Robust AI and Data Systems research group operates at the intersection of artificial intelligence, software engineering, and data-intensive systems. We develop solutions that enable the collection, analysis, sharing, and utilization of data in a safe, efficient, and responsible way.

Our expertise includes robust and reliable AI, big data analytics, machine learning, decision support, synthetic data, time series analysis, and probabilistic AI. We also conduct research on software architecture, digital platforms, open data, data quality, and systems designed to be long-lived and operate across technologies, organizations, and societal sectors.

The group has extensive experience in developing digital solutions for areas such as transport, logistics, energy, healthcare, fisheries, smart cities, and the public sector. At the same time, we work on inclusive digitalization to ensure that technology and AI solutions can be used by more people and create value for society as a whole.

We combine research and technology development with domain knowledge and close collaboration with users and clients. Our goal is to create solutions that are not only technologically advanced but also practical, understandable, and robust in addressing real-world needs.

How we work

We collaborate closely with industry, the public sector, and research environments to develop solutions that address concrete challenges. Our projects range from fundamental research to piloting, demonstration, and implementation in operational systems.

Our work is based on interdisciplinary methods, combining software engineering, AI methods, data analytics, and user insight. We develop and test solutions iteratively, often in collaboration with end users and domain experts. This enables us to build systems that are robust, secure, and adapted to complex environments.

The research group also focuses on quality and trust in AI systems. This includes aspects such as explainability, handling uncertainty, data quality, privacy, and secure data sharing. We are committed to ensuring that technology can be used responsibly, including in safety-critical and socially critical applications.

Through laboratories, demonstrators, and digital test environments, we explore how new technologies can create value in practice. The Makerspace laboratory, for example, provides opportunities for experimentation and prototyping across digital and physical systems.

What sets us apart?

What distinguishes the Robust AI and Data Systems research group is the combination of strong research expertise and experience with applied technology development in complex societal domains.

We do not focus solely on algorithms and models in isolation, but on the entire ecosystem surrounding robust digital solutions—from data collection and software architecture to AI models, user needs, and the operation of long-lived systems.

The group has particular expertise in how AI can be applied in practice within systems that must remain reliable over time, handle uncertainty, and function in interaction with people and organizations. We therefore combine advanced AI research with knowledge of software engineering, security, data sharing, and sustainable digitalization.

We also have extensive experience with cross-sector and cross-technology collaboration, which makes us well equipped to develop solutions for complex societal challenges.

An international environment

The research group participates in a number of international research and innovation projects, including those funded by the EU. We collaborate with leading research environments, universities, technology companies, and public organizations in Europe and internationally.

Our research is part of international initiatives in artificial intelligence, smart transport systems, digital platforms, open data, and sustainable societal solutions. The group also contributes to the development of methods and technologies used in international projects within transport, energy, and smart city development.

Through international collaboration, we gain access to new research arenas, test environments, and datasets, while also strengthening Norwegian technology development and competitiveness.
