Our expertise
The Medical Sensors and BioMEMS research group develops microsensors, lab-on-a-chip solutions and integrated microsystems for medical and biological applications. We combine expertise in micro- and nanotechnology, electronics, microfluidics, materials technology, biosensors, data analysis and medical technology to develop solutions that enable faster, simpler and more precise health analyses.
We work with technologies that can be used for applications such as disease diagnostics, monitoring of various health parameters inside and on the surface of the body, neurotechnology, personalised medicine, detection of bacteria and toxins, and analysis of biological samples. Our sensors and microchips can be integrated into wearable devices, medical equipment or compact analytical platforms, enabling advanced diagnostics outside traditional laboratories.
The research group works closely with healthcare providers, industry, start-ups and research organisations to develop technologies that address real needs in society.
How we work
We develop technology from initial idea to demonstrator and prototype. Our work ranges from fundamental research into sensor materials and microstructures, through concept development, to the design, fabrication, testing and integration of complete sensor systems.
We develop and validate solutions in close collaboration with clients and partners. We combine strong theoretical expertise and modelling with experimental research and extensive expertise in microchip fabrication to ensure that the technology works in practice – technologically, clinically and commercially.
We take a user-centred and needs-driven approach. Technologies are developed in dialogue with healthcare professionals, industry and public-sector organisations to ensure that the solutions deliver value in real-world applications.
Our uniqueness
What makes us unique is the combination of advanced microtechnology and applied medical research within a single research environment. We have expertise across the entire value chain – from materials and microchip design to biological analysis and system integration. We have access to a state-of-the-art cleanroom laboratory at SINTEF MiNaLab, where we develop and manufacture both prototypes and commercial products.
The research group also has extensive expertise in industrialising sensor technology and translating research into solutions that can be adopted by industry and healthcare providers. This makes us an attractive partner for both established companies and emerging technology businesses.
We develop technologies that can reduce the need for large laboratories, provide patients with faster results and contribute to more sustainable and accessible healthcare services.
An international research environment
The research group participates in international research projects and collaborates with leading research organisations, universities and industry partners across Europe. We are involved in projects funded by organisations including the EU and the Research Council of Norway, and contribute to the development of the medical microsystems and biosensor technologies of the future.
Through international collaboration, we gain access to advanced infrastructure, global networks and markets that help bring Norwegian sensor technology to the world.
