Corrosion

Corrosion is a major cause of reduced service life for materials and components, increased costs, and safety challenges across many industries. At SINTEF, we combine experimental testing, materials analysis, and modelling to understand, predict, and prevent corrosion.

Corrosion, commonly referred to as rust in everyday language, is one of the most common causes of damage and material failure in technical systems. Our goal is to increase the understanding of corrosion mechanisms in metallic materials and reduce the degradation of structures and components. Through collaboration with customers and research partners, we contribute through R&D, advanced laboratory testing, failure analysis, field experience, and modelling. We provide our customers with the knowledge, methods, and decision support needed to understand root causes, reduce risk, select robust material and protection solutions, and extend the service life of their systems.

We apply our knowledge and expertise to develop practical solutions that contribute to longer service life, more reliable operation, and reduced energy and resource consumption. This is our contribution to a more sustainable society.'

Our expertise includes

  • Corrosion of carbon steel, stainless steel, weathering steel, aluminium, magnesium, and other metallic materials.
  • Corrosion mechanisms in aqueous systems and environments, including seawater, formation water, and process environments.
  • Environmentally assisted cracking (SCC, hydrogen-related degradation, etc.) under extreme conditions such as high pressure/high temperature (HP/HT), low/high pH, and environments containing gases such as H₂S.
  • Degradation caused by the interaction between corrosion and mechanical loading (corrosion fatigue, tribocorrosion).
  • Corrosion protection, including coatings, anodizing, and cathodic protection.
  • Corrosion monitoring and prediction for materials and components.
  • Material selection and qualification for use in demanding and corrosive environments.
  • Advanced characterization of materials and surfaces.

Services we offer

We solve corrosion-related challenges together with our customers. The customer understands the system, the operating conditions, and the consequences. We contribute with research-based expertise, experimental methods, advanced analysis, and independent assessments. Together, we develop knowledge, methods, and decision-support tools that help customers better understand, prevent, and manage corrosion and material degradation.

We assist our customers with, among other things:

  • Research and development (R&D) related to corrosion and degradation mechanisms, including the interaction between environment, materials, mechanical loading, manufacturing processes, and operation.
  • R&D on surface protection through coatings and anodizing.
  • Tailored test setups that replicate relevant operating conditions, combined with standardized test methods to improve understanding of actual damage and degradation processes.
  • Failure analysis and root cause analysis of all types of corrosion damage in materials and components, including unexpected rust formation, corrosion damage, surface-initiated material failures, environmentally induced cracking, coating failures, and corrosion associated with bolts, welds, rivets, piping, and more.
  • Advanced corrosion testing of materials and components in demanding operating environments, including testing under combined mechanical loading and wear/friction conditions (tribocorrosion).
  • Evaluation of coatings and protection systems, including performance and degradation over time.
  • Prediction of degradation and service-life development based on testing and modelling.
  • Assessment of material selection and protection strategies for specific operating conditions, with focus on performance, service life, maintenance requirements, and resource efficiency.

We work with challenges across a wide range of industries, including the marine and offshore sectors, process industries, the energy sector, and emerging hydrogen value chains. Common to all of these is the need for reliable materials and solutions that can withstand demanding environments over time.

Our approach

We develop knowledge, methods, and solutions in close collaboration with our customers, tailored to their specific challenges and applications. We provide scientifically grounded insight into what is happening and why, enabling you to evaluate appropriate actions for your materials, components, and systems.

To achieve this, we combine:

  • Laboratory testing, including both standardized methods and tailored test setups.
  • Advanced materials and surface characterization.
  • Numerical modelling to study and predict degradation and corrosion.
  • Close collaboration with NTNU as part of a leading joint research environment.
