Batteries as voltage support

Under-dimensioned power grids can cause power quality issues for customers and trigger large investments for grid companies.

Lnett is investigating, together with CINELDI, if off-the-shelf battery-systems can be a temporal or permanent alternative to grid upgrades.

In the fall of 2019, a 18 kW, 19,6 kWh battery-system was installed to act as voltage support in a 230 V power grid. We have gained valuable experiences in how the battery system operates and its contribution to reduce slow voltage variations.

In the next phase of the pilot we will investigate measures for voltage regulation adapted to changes in ambient temperature, reduction in voltage response times and increased efficiency of the battery-system.
