Influence of Welding Thermal Cycle on the Mechanical Conditions around Clad/Pipe Interface

Sammendrag

The influence of thermal cycles under hyperbaric condition on the interface between 316 stainless steel and X70 pipeline material at clad pipes was investigated using finite element modelling approach. Three different scenarios were defined and simulated in Abaqus®.   The employed material model is elastic-plastic with temperature dependency for all Thermal/structural/Electrical properties. One of the scenarios is identical to the conditions in SmitWeld machine in which Joule resistance heating is used to apply thermal cycles. For this case, Abaqus Standard Multiphysics module was used to define a coupled thermal-structural-electrical model. The results suggest that the samples will experience stress accumulation during the simulated thermal cycles although the stress level in the studied cases are different. The heat flux flow across the interface and stress and strain conditions can be fine-tuned using the presented results to justify the pre-weld and process conditions.
