Activated sludge is one example of applying microorganisms to water treatment. It is widely used in e.g. sewage treatment, industrial wastewater treatment and other wastewater treatments. A large part of the organics removed from the water is transformed to sludge and, thus needs to be removed from the process. Treating the waste (excess sludge) can have high costs.
