WP 1 Goal

• Develop a novel procedure for structural integrity assessment based on quantitative modelling of residual stresses and associated changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of the material.

WP 1 Research challenges

• Define a crack driving force in a welded steel component in which there is a residual stress field in addition to the external loads.
• Establish reliable fracture criteria and failure mechanisms associated with this crack driving force.

WP 1 Project results

• A new three parameter (CTOD, Q, R) approach to characterise the crack tip stress field in the presence of residual stresses has been developed.
• Failure assessment of multi-pass girth welds of a ferritic ASTM SA 516 steel pipe has been carried out in a case study.
